MusiXplore is proud to present the duo of Saxophonist Blaise Siwula and guitarist Sten Hostfalt on Sunday, September 16. The concert begins at 1pm. $5 suggested contribution.

Blaise is primarily an alto saxophonist, but also plays saxophones, clarinets, flutes, percussion and string instruments, and computer-altered sound files as background for improvisation. Find out more at his web site.

Sten Hostfalt has been described as “groundbreaking” by Jazz Review and “inimitable” and “impressive” by PM NYC/ Paper Magazineand Time Out NY. One of the legendary New York Jazz and Improvised music scene’s most original voices, and one of the most innovative on his instrument to emerge during the past decade, Sten apprenticed in traditional jazz orchestras led by Phil Wilson, Herb Pomeroy and George Russell. He appeared as a leader, composer and featured soloist on recordings initiated by Paul Bley and Gary Burton and studied composition and improvisation with Jimmy Giuffre and Joe Maneri.

While current work has focused more on modern / traditional original compositions based on standard jazz songs and forms, this has not excluded frequent excursions into Electronica, Drum & Bass, Hip Hop, Soul and Pop. As a NYC based bandleader, proprietor of the independent record label Sonus Rex and with his sixth album in process, he has for the past decade actively fused microtonality with electronica, spoken word and a variety of instrumentations including trombone, violin, clarinet and mandolin – freely using a mix of third stream, avantgarde and traditional/mainstream Jazz aesthetics.
