Sunday’s Show
Thanks to Blaise Siwula and Sten Hostfalt for trekking out from the city to play for us. Here’s video of one of their performances.
Thanks, Ivanhoe and Paterson!
The venue for all scheduled musiXplore shows is the Ivanhoe Wheelhouse in the Historic District of Paterson. The Wheelhouse is home to the Ivanhoe Artists Mosaic, a group of artists who live and work in Paterson. The Wheelhouse is property of the City of Paterson, so we’d like to thank both the Ivanhoe Artists and the City of Paterson for their generous support of the musiXplore program!

October 21 Concert Lineup
MusiXplore is proud to add the duo of Dennis Young and Raymond Bally to our October 21 concert. Dennis Young was a member of the legendary 80s band Liquid Liquid, whose best know song Cavern was sampled by Grandmaster Flash for his song White Lines.
Dennis and Raymond will be joining Ping Pong (Michael Durek and Mark Weinberg).
This concert features 100% New Jersey musicians and composers.
Blaise Siwula and Sten Hostfalt Live!
MusiXplore is proud to present the duo of Saxophonist Blaise Siwula and guitarist Sten Hostfalt on Sunday, September 16. The concert begins at 1pm. $5 suggested contribution.
Blaise is primarily an alto saxophonist, but also plays saxophones, clarinets, flutes, percussion and string instruments, and computer-altered sound files as background for improvisation. Find out more at his web site.
Sten Hostfalt has been described as “groundbreaking” by Jazz Review and “inimitable” and “impressive” by PM NYC/ Paper Magazineand Time Out NY. One of the legendary New York Jazz and Improvised music scene’s most original voices, and one of the most innovative on his instrument to emerge during the past decade, Sten apprenticed in traditional jazz orchestras led by Phil Wilson, Herb Pomeroy and George Russell. He appeared as a leader, composer and featured soloist on recordings initiated by Paul Bley and Gary Burton and studied composition and improvisation with Jimmy Giuffre and Joe Maneri.
While current work has focused more on modern / traditional original compositions based on standard jazz songs and forms, this has not excluded frequent excursions into Electronica, Drum & Bass, Hip Hop, Soul and Pop. As a NYC based bandleader, proprietor of the independent record label Sonus Rex and with his sixth album in process, he has for the past decade actively fused microtonality with electronica, spoken word and a variety of instrumentations including trombone, violin, clarinet and mandolin – freely using a mix of third stream, avantgarde and traditional/mainstream Jazz aesthetics. Find out more at his web site.
Your visit to Paterson
musiXplore is located in the heart of Paterson’s historic district. Paterson was a major center of the Industrial Revolution in America, initially because of the water power provided by the Great Falls on the Passaic River. The Great Falls is just a 1/2 block away from musiXplore’s home at the Ivanhoe Wheelhouse and is definitely worth a look. Take a look at this brochure about other historic sites in the area.
Artists booked for fall dates
On September 16, 2012, New Jersey music lovers will be able to enjoy the music of New York free jazz saxophonist Blaise Siwula. Blaise performs on alto and tenor sax and clarinet. As Ken Waxman wrote in The New York City Jazz Record “Especially animated is Siwula, who on a piece such as ‘Toy Box’ opens the container to reveal staccato tongue slaps, balanced reed bites and overblowing into every corner of the package. At the same time he isn’t averse to ending a series of irregularly accented stutters with a joking quote from ‘Heart and Soul’.” You can hear samples of Blaise’s playing at http://www.blaisesiwula.com/.
October 21 is our occasion to host hyperactive NJ musicians Michael Durek and Mark Weinberg as Ping Pong. Ping Pong has a new ambient electronic EP dropping any day, but in the mean time you can hear Mike and Mark at these pages: Cloud Cloud (Michael Durek) and Trinitron (Mark Weinberg). You can read more about them here.
The fall season will wrap up on November 18 with an a performance by Ian Smits and other members of the legendary New Jersey improvisors Monkeyworks. The NY Times has described Monkeyworks’ music as “jazz-meets-African-meets-electronic music”. We’re discussing a live improvisation to accompany silent films, a performance niche that is a Monkeyworks specialty.
All performances will begin with a set by NJ avant-jazz group ArtCrime.
